This months meeting proved that our meetings are not all about cars and general knowledge quizzes. It’s about having a good time and those who attended certainly did.
A cracking closely fought contest between teams of 2 using skilful wrist action to accurately throw dice and to use their artistic flair in drawing a beetle (the insect type, not the car). There were six rounds and if your team completed the beetle first then you won that round and were rewarded with chocolate. After all six rounds had been played the points were added up and what do points make? - Prizes.
There were two overall winners, and the prize of two bottles of wine was shared. Kim and Paul had the lowest score and were presented with two wooden spoons which Kim insisted on playing for the rest of the night.
Janine won the best drawn Beetle who she named ‘Bugathy’ and was presented with more chocolate.
August was a good month for events. Following the Robin Hood Run was the International at Stafford which was attended well by the Derwent crew who had a brilliant time getting drunk and just being silly. One of the highlights was watching a Christmas tree complete with lights bang and bump everyone on the dodgems. On Bank Holiday Monday several attended the local Moorgreen Agricultural Show, a traditional show with lots to see and do. It was great that we could be part of the event (celebrating its 160th year), including Angie who reluctantly drove her Stag into the main arena after lots of pleading from the organisers.
Mike, Debbie, my son Nigel and I joined the Lincs crowd for their camping weekend and had a brilliant time. The campsite at Woodall Spa was flat but very windy, which was useful as we saw the windmill where we stopped on the Saturday Run in action. The other stop off point was Bateman’s brewery which was interesting but why where we all driving!!!
All weekend we played Phil’s fiendish quiz and needed to drink several cans of beer to stop our brain’s from straining. Amazingly, Mike/Debbie and Colin/Nigel were equal second in the feely bag competition which was pure frustration. Ellie also organised a game of ‘Scattergories’. Towards the end my answers got sillier and sillier. We await the result of this game with anticipation. Sunday morning got a little embassing when even after having the raffle ticket redrawn several times came away with four raffle prizes. Saved me having to buy something for the wife!!
OH NO! I have just realised that it’s nearly that time of year when it will be soon upon us…no not Christmas. I was referring to the Derwent Valley Bowl. Yes the date for this year’s Derwent Valley Bowl has been set. We are looking forward to all TSSC area’s joining us to compete and take the trophy off the Nott’s Area, last year’s winners of the beloved trophy. Please don’t let them win it two years in a row…we would never hear the last of it. Join us from 7:30pm on Tuesday 20th October at Smalley Common Ex-Serviceman’s Club for a night of silly games. It does not matter if you cannot get until later just arrive as soon as you can – you will still be able to play. A finger buffet will also be laid on at £4 per head. Children of all ages welcome.
We have also set the date of next years Peak Run. It has moved back to its traditional slot being the last weekend in June so place the 25th, 26th and 27th June into your 2010 diaries.
One final point after 3 years as Area Organiser Roger Buck announced his intention to retire from the position of AO at the next AGM. Anyone interested in taking on this important role should express their interest to Roger who will explain the role further.
Bye for Now
